3-Day National Symposium on Modern Materials and manufacturing Techniques

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kanjirappally (AJCE), organized 3-Day National Symposium on Modern Materials and manufacturing Techniques in association with Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE),The Institution of Engineers India (IEI) and Indian society for Technical Education Kerala Section from 9th to 11th January 2019.
A total of 30 delegates registered for the symposium. The registered delegates comprised 20 faculty
members from different engineering colleges including 3 delegates from outside the State and 10 delegates from AJCE. A total of more than 50 delegates attended different sessions held during three days.



The symposium was inaugurated by Dr. M. Rijesh, Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore during a function presided over by the Principal of the college, Dr. Z. V Lakaparampil in the presence of Assistant Manager Rev Fr.Benny Kodimarathumootil. The Asst. Manager and the Principal congratulated the department of Mechanical Engineering for taking earnest efforts to conduct a symposium in the field of material synthesis and development, which is the relevant field of researchers working in environmental friendly sustainable development. The delegates were welcomed by Mr. Toms Philip, Head of Mechanical Engineering department. Dr. M. Rijesh in his inaugural speech briefed the recent developments in new materials and its applications. The inaugural session concluded with vote of thanks by Prof. Binu Thomas, Associate professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering. This was followed by various lectures



Dr. M. Rijesh handled a technical session on “Emergence of Biomaterials in Healthcare” in which he discussed various novel materials used in biomedical sector, aspects to be considered for choosing such a material and scope of research in the field. The lecture was very well received by the participants. The guest was honored with a memento presented by Prof. Toms Philip, HOD – ME at the end of the session.


Dr. P. Anirudhan conducted an interactive session on important aspects of lubricity in machining. He enlightened the participants with the importance of surface science and made them aware about the need of indepth studies on the concept of lubricity.  A session on “Processing of difficult to machine materials” was handled by Dr. P. S. Sreejith. Dr. Sreejith discussed various unconventional machining techniques that can be used to process materials with low machinability. The session was followed an intense question – answer session. The speaker was felicitated by Dr. Roshan Kuruvila, Assoc. Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, AJCE Kanjirappally.
 The last session on Day one was handled by Dr. Akhil S. Karun from CSIR – NIIST. Dr. Akhil elaborated the concepts of functionally graded materials and novel techniques to create functionally graded materials and their characterization. The lecture was very well appreciated by the participants and on behalf of the organizing committee, the speaker was felicitated by a presenting a memento to him by Dr. Ajithkumar J. P., Assoc. Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering (Automobile), AJCE, Kanjirappally.

 Dr. Soney C. George conducted an enlightening session on tribology of polymer composites. He discussed the influence of various nano particles on the tribological characteristics of polymer composites and suggested a set of guidelines for development of such composites with improved properties. The speaker was honoured by Dr. Toms Philip, Head – Department of Mechanical Engineering, AJCE, Kanjirappally for his informative lecture

The concept of Green Tribology and initiatives to be taken for implementing the same in manufacturing sector was elaborated by Dr. N. H. Jayadas. Dr. Jayadas has elaborated the utility of biodegradable lubricants and its effectiveness in replacing the conventional lubricating fluids. Research prospects in the domain was also discussed. The speaker was felicitated by Dr. John Felix, Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, AJCE, Kanjirappally.

 Dr. Basil Kuriachen delivered a lecture on recent trends on micro machining, which is one of the most advanced and emerging research field. He explained the underlying physics involved in most commonly used micro machining techniques and discussed the research prospects in depth. After a long discussion with the participants, he was felicitated with memento given by Dr. P. K. Mondal, Asst. Professor, Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, AJCE Kanjirappally

A session handled by Prof. K Sreekumar discussed the role of material characterization in material development and material processing. He gave an elaborate lecture on various material as well as surface characterization techniques. The subject expert was honoured with a memento presented by Prof. Binu Thomas, Assoc. Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, AJCE, Kanjirappally.


A session on enhancement of properties of composites has been delivered by Dr. G Unnikrishnan. Professor discussed the topic highlighting the basic principles involved in it. The question – answer session at the end of the talk as very much informative to all participants. The effort of the speaker was appreciated by presenting him with a memento by Dr. John Felix, Head – Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, AJCE, Kanjirappally

Mr. Sreenath Pollackal of EMI Products Bangalore, discussed various additive manufacturing techniques and discussed there advantages with the help of developed products. Participants had the opportunity to see and understand the working of different types of 3D printers. Students had a very good interactive session with him. The session ended with felicitation of the speaker by presenting him a memento by Prof. Binu Thomas, Assoc. Professor – Mechanical Engineering, AJCE, Kanjirappally.

The Valedictory function on 11thJanuary, 2019 at 4pm began with Mr. Binu Thomas, Assoc. Professor, welcomed the gathering. Felicitation address given by Prof.Toms Philip, Head, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering. Feedback on the program from participants were collected. The sessions were excellent from the comments made by participants. Prof. Toms Philip, distributed certificates to participants followed by vote of thanks by Dr. Vishal John Mathai, Asst. Professor. The three days event came to a conclusion with the National Anthem.
